December 4, 2021
Beautiful Beloveds,
When I go home, one of the things I love is seeing my loved ones in a new light. My sister and I almost immediately revert to our younger selves, filling roles we claimed as children. And yet, I remember watching the change as my baby sister became a mother for the first time, how it changed her entirely and not at all. Now I watch her children grow from toddlers to teens, becoming more fully who they are. Conversely, it’s so fun to see how my parents morph into their childhood selves (middle son, baby daughter) when their siblings arrive. As we sit around the table, I can see before me, the foundation of my life and identity. They are a part of me, their faith, experience, stories shaped and are shaping me still.
Before Jesus began his public ministry, his cousin John was preaching in the desert, laying the foundation for Jesus and the coming kindom of God. Before John began his ministry, his parents, Elizabeth and Zechariah laid a foundation of faithful patience and service to God. Before Jesus was born, Mary and Joseph were shaped by the faith laid down for them. What is the foundation of your life?
Tomorrow is the Second Sunday of Advent. We’ll continue our worship series, Close to Home, as we explore Laying the Foundation, and lighting the candle of Peace.
Peace,
Heather
