Pastor John Wesley Taylor has been at the United Methodist Church of Osterville since July 1, 2022. We asked him several questions to help you get to know him better.
Pastor John, from your view, what’s the role of a Pastor?
I am called by God to share the love of Jesus and preach the Gospel. I am also called to lead the church- the Body of Christ – to serve others in need. I love being a pastor and bringing healing and joy to people through trusting in God’s grace.
Did you always imagine you’d be a Pastor?
I am a PK- preacher’s kid- and loved growing up in the church but never thought I would be a pastor. It wasn’t until I received a calling from God when I was 20 years old.
Who were some of the mentors that you had?
My father was a wonderful pastor and influenced me greatly. I also knew many other pastors who mentored me. Many people in the church I grew up in were great examples of people who loved God and their neighbors.
What’s the most challenging part of being a Pastor?
When I focus on all the problems people have and forget to pray and focus on Jesus. Like the 24-hour news cycle we live in, we all become overwhelmed with what is wrong in the world instead of trusting that God is good and redeeming love is available. The struggle is real but so is God. I want to help everyone but need to remember that faith is a journey, meaning, purpose, and joy are found in our relationship with God.
What encourages you?
Worshipping, the Word of God, praying, being in the church family and helping others, laughing, and being creative. Enjoying God’s creation and exercise.
Who are your favorite authors?
Adam Hamilton is one of my heroes. He is a pastor of the Church of the Resurrection in Kansas. He has written many books about faith and God’s Word. I also enjoy Stephen King books and books that bring me closer to God.
Talk about your family.
I am someone who has recovered from divorce and has remarried. MaryBeth and I were married on December 27th, 2023. This experience has opened my heart to hurting people who need to know they are not alone and that there is hope. MaryBeth and I are testimonies of trusting in the saving grace of Jesus and not giving up on love. Between us, we have 6 children. Two that are adopted. Our children are all in their mid-20s and are spreading their wings. We are very blessed to have a close relationship with all of them. MaryBeth and I consider ourselves to be a team in ministry.
What are your strengths?
I enjoy my work as a pastor and helping people know how special they are to God. I have been a pastor for 36 years, and God has blessed me with the ability to preach God’s Word, so people experience the joy of faith. I have a pretty good sense of humor and am easy to talk to. I try to be a good listener.[/e
How does this help you as a Leader/Pastor?
I have a team approach for everything we do as a church family. Everyone is vitally important and has talents and gifts from God. The worst thing people can feel is alone and useless. Everyone wants to be part of something wonderful; the church is where people can feel alive in the spirit. God has called me and gifted me to communicate God’s saving grace to everyone- and to help people grow in this grace.
What encourages you most as a pastor of a growing church?
When someone comes to know they are forgiven and loved and are needed, everyone rejoices. When new people feel at home and loved, it is contagious. Jesus teaches us to serve and to find great joy and purpose in giving ourselves away.
What are the barriers to growth for our UMC?
We live in a busy world with many distractions. People don’t know what they miss when they are alone and hurting. People can have an idea about the church and not realize that we are welcoming and accepting of all. One barrier is a false perception that all churches do is judge people and make them feel bad. I am confident people will be drawn to our church because it’s all about relationships of genuine love.
What is your favorite scripture?
I have too many to choose one. The Christmas, Good Friday, and Resurrection stories are key. Also, when Jesus tells the Good Samaritan story- challenging all of us to love God and our neighbors. But the one that comes to me is Philippians 4:13- I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
