Saturday Tidings – The United Methodist Church

Beautiful Beloveds,

This week we resume our Beguiled by Beauty worship series. On Sunday, we pause to ponder the majesty and the mystery of God. I wonder, if we took a moment to write what we don’t know about God, how many pages could we fill? If we let our inner child ask every thing we’ve ever wanted to know about God, every who, what, where, when, why and how what depth of mystery might we discover? Conversely, if we wrote what we do know about the Divine would it be an act of certainty, faith, and/or deepening humility?

On this Holiday weekend, as we observe the birth of our nation, I pray for joy and safety for you all. May there be time to reflect on the dreams of our founders and the state of our nation. In the preamble to the Declaration of Independence, they wrote, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” How we have lived into their ideals? How we have fallen short? And how we’ve exceeded their imaginations? We are a people, a nation in progress. May God forgive our failures and re-inspire our imaginations.
