From your perspective, what is the role of a pastor?

I am called by God to share the love of Jesus and preach the Gospel. I am also called to lead the Church—the Body of Christ—to serve others in need. I love being a pastor and bringing healing and joy to people through trusting in God’s grace.

Did you always imagine you’d become a pastor?

I am a PK—a preacher’s kid—and loved growing up in the church, but I never thought I would become a pastor. It wasn’t until I received God’s calling at the age of 20 that I knew this was where He was leading me.

Who were some of your mentors?

My father was a wonderful pastor and influenced me greatly. I was also blessed to know many pastors who mentored me throughout my life. The people in my home church modeled what it meant to love God and love their neighbors.

What is the most challenging part of being a pastor?

It becomes difficult when I focus on people’s problems instead of keeping my eyes on Jesus through prayer. Like the 24-hour news cycle, we can become overwhelmed by what is wrong in the world instead of trusting that God’s redeeming love is always at work. The struggle is real—but so is God. I want to help everyone, while remembering that faith is a journey where meaning, purpose, and joy are found in our relationship with Him.

What encourages you?

Worship, reading God’s Word, prayer, being with my church family, helping others, laughing, being creative, enjoying God’s creation, and exercising all encourage and renew me.

Who are your favorite authors?

Adam Hamilton is one of my heroes. He serves as pastor of the Church of the Resurrection in Kansas and has written many wonderful books about faith and Scripture. I also enjoy reading Stephen King and books that help me grow closer to God.

Tell us about your family.

I am someone who has experienced divorce and God’s healing through remarriage. MaryBeth and I were married on December 27, 2023. This journey has given me a deeper compassion for people who are hurting and need hope. Together we are living testimonies of God’s saving grace and the power of never giving up on love.

Between us we have six children, including two who were adopted. They are all in their twenties and beginning their own journeys. We are grateful for the close relationships we share with each of them. MaryBeth and I truly see ourselves as partners in ministry.

What are your strengths?

I truly enjoy serving as a pastor and helping people understand how deeply loved they are by God. After more than 36 years in ministry, God has blessed me with a passion for preaching His Word in ways that help people experience the joy of faith. I also have a good sense of humor, enjoy listening to others, and strive to be approachable.

How does that shape your leadership?

I believe ministry is always a team effort. Every person is important and has unique gifts from God. No one should ever feel alone or without purpose. The church is a place where people can discover that they are needed, valued, and alive in God’s Spirit. My calling is to communicate God’s saving grace and help people grow in that grace.

What encourages you most in a growing church?

Nothing is more exciting than seeing someone realize they are forgiven, loved, and needed. When new people feel welcomed and at home, that joy spreads throughout the congregation. Jesus teaches us that true purpose is found in serving others.

What are some of the barriers to church growth today?

We live in a busy world filled with distractions. Many people are hurting but don’t realize what they’re missing by being disconnected from a church family. Some also have misconceptions that churches are judgmental rather than welcoming. I believe people are drawn to authentic relationships, and our church is committed to sharing Christ’s genuine love with everyone.

Do you have a favorite Bible verse?

There are so many meaningful passages that it’s difficult to choose just one. The Christmas story, Good Friday, Easter, and the Good Samaritan are all foundational to my faith. One verse I often return to is:

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
